ROUSE & JONES

ARTIST STATEMENT

NOIR is a series of photographs created to resemble motion picture stills from French and American crime films of the early and mid-20th century.

Our passion for vintage photography and love of films from the Golden Age of Hollywood led us to collaborate on this fine art series. The aim for each image is to create a narrative in the film noir style within the space of a single frame. What drives us is the challenge to combine these two related but separate mediums in a way that is both unique in process and instantly recognizable as imagery from the classic noir period.

We create our images using a cinematic approach; first, we write a script that describes the scene in detail, including setting, action, dialogue, and background information. We then rehearse the scene with actors and block their movements. The actors then play the scene while we shoot the action. We do several “takes” of each scene, shooting from different angles and using multiple lighting setups. We allow the actors to improvise in order to heighten the realism of the images.

The NOIR Glamour Portraits are an extension of our fictional cinematic world; each portrait is accompanied by a biography and film credits that bring the performer to life.

NOIR is currently on display at the ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood, CA through September 15th.
